More about Animal Experimentation/Vivesection

You may have heard of the Thalidomide drug, given to pregnant women to prevent morning sickness. After testing on animals, it proved to be safe; it was therefore declared safe for humans. We have all seen the results of the poor deformed babies born because their mothers had taken this drug.

In 2006 we heard about the TGN1412 trial, which took place at London's Northwick Park Hospital; it almost took the life of six male volunteers. Prior to being given to these volunteers this drug had already been tested on monkeys at a dose 500 times stronger than that given to the humans, the monkeys had no ill effects whatsoever.

Aspirin one of the miracle drugs of the 20th century caused birth defects in cats and mice.

Penicillin kills guinea pigs.

Cancer drugs that used in humans for extended periods will kill dogs even in small doses

Morphine, a depressant to humans, is a stimulant to cats, goats, and horses

Practolol, a drug supposed to be for heart disorders causes blindness in humans but again had no ill effects in animal tests.

Arsenic, which is both toxic and a carcinogenic to humans, has not caused cancer in any other species.

In the early 1990's five people died after receiving an animal tested hepatitis drug.

Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a drug that was supposed to prevent miscarriages, caused cancer and/or birth defects in humans, but... need I say it... The list is endless.

Oh yes, I've heard all the arguments for these tests.... If they had only been more stringent, or if the dosages had been decreased, increased or altered or the ingredients had been changed... Give it a rest!

Testing on animals is WRONG no matter which way you put the icing on the cake!!

Often we find that two humans will not react the same way to the same drug; penicillin will kill me yet it might save someone else in my own family! How then can it be accepted that testing on a completely different species can give us anything but a deep scar on our morals.

But it's not only the medical community; other laboratory testing that I have first hand knowledge of is for the pure vanity. The force-feeding of face powder to beautiful Labradors... to see at what point their stomachs burst! Beauty products such as mascara, shampoo forced into rabbits eyes just to see what the effect is.
